Tom and his family immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1946. His parents were Holocaust survivors. Tom grew up in Los Angeles, attended college, and then went to work for A.G. Becker & Company as a stockbroker. Thereafter, he joined his father in banking.
Tom Spiegel became President and CEO of Columbia Savings & Loan, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, in 1977.
For two years in the mid-80s, Forbes Magazine rated Columbia as the #1 savings & loan in the U.S. based on return of equity and return on assets. It was considered one of the country's most profitable savings and loans for years.
Columbia’s business strategy was to be a leader in the high yield bond market in terms of understanding credit and risk. Columbia became one of Drexel Burnham’s largest clients funding leveraged buyouts in the '80s. Columbia also specialized in the high-end (jumbo loans) residential lending market, specifically in Beverly Hills, West Los Angeles, and other affluent areas in Southern California.
When Spiegel took over in 1977, the asset base of Columbia Savings & Loan was approximately $80M and he grew the company to an asset base of $14 billion.
Spiegel resigned as Chairman & CEO of Columbia in 1989 after the government targeted Columbia Savings & Loan and Spiegel.
Tom starting investing and managing companies in 1995. In this capacity, he has served as a mentor to aspiring and seasoned executives alike. He has served on the board of Portal Player, a supplier of digital and audio technology platforms for the consumer electronics market, and American Well, which is a privately held telehealth company that connects patients instantly with doctors over secure video.
Tom is the Chairman & CEO of Linq3, a company that provides the products and technology to allow consumers to play the lottery at any point of sale at the largest retailers in the US and notifies the consumer of winning via text. Linq3 creates a more positive lottery experience for consumers and creates significant revenue opportunity for states and retailers alike.
Tom is married to the former Marilyn Winn. They reside in Las Vegas, Nevada.
